PepeNode raised $2.7 million over a five-month presale, listed on Uniswap at 14:00 UTC on January 8, 2026 at $0.001212, and was down as much as 96% to $0.00007058 before most buyers had refreshed the page. That is the flagship meme coin play-to-earn launch of the year, and it sets the tone for everything below.
What follows is five meme-token games and near-games, ordered by how much of the product actually exists today rather than by presale marketing or chart. After that, the sector numbers that answer the question people keep typing into search: whether any of this is sustainable.
1. TerraX Rebirthed, the one funded by sales instead of emissions
TerraX is a browser and mobile RPG built on the TitanX protocol, running against Ethereum and Solana, and its most interesting design decision is what it did not do: there is no TerraX token. Rewards are denominated in TitanX, the protocol's existing asset, which removes the single most common failure mode in this category, a bespoke reward coin printed faster than anyone wants to buy it.
The loop is tap-to-earn ore mining (coal, iron, silver, gold and higher tiers), tool upgrades, crafting, and a peer-to-peer marketplace priced in TitanX. Up to 30% of weekly marketplace sales are pooled and paid back out as rewards, with a weekly world-boss event distributing by contribution. Per Chainplay's review, updated July 27, 2026, recent additions include fishing, tree cutting, potion crafting and new high-tier ores.
Revenue-share reward pools scale down when activity does, which is the point. What no published source gives is a player count, so the size of that 30% is unknown.
2. PepeNode: a mining rig that mines a chart
The pitch, in the project's own words via CoinMarketCap: "PEPENODE lets you build your own virtual meme coin mining rig. Buy Nodes. Build Your Server Room. Combine Nodes For Huge Bonuses." There is no physical hashing involved. You spend PEPENODE on virtual nodes, 70% of every upgrade or purchase is burned per project materials carried by a sponsored Coinspeaker post, and top-tier setups are said to pay out in PEPE and FARTCOIN.
The burn is a genuine sink. It was also pitched alongside a 653% presale staking APY, and CoinMarketCap notes no formal on-chain staking mechanism listed despite presale marketing of rates as high as 848%.
Launch day numbers: 210 billion supply, roughly $255 million FDV at listing, a liquidity pool of 37 ETH and about 95 million tokens, and one wallet dumping over $31,000 within the first minute. A 96% drawdown against that pool was arithmetic, not sentiment.
The contract was audited by Coinsult during the presale. An audit is a statement about code, not about whether a token sink can outrun a supply of 210 billion. Claims of a planned DOGE integration circulate widely; none of the sources reviewed here document one. Check the live CoinMarketCap page before treating any of this as current.
3. DOGEDASH, a complete lifecycle you can read end to end
DOGEDASH is worth studying precisely because it is finished. A BEP-20 token launched October 8, 2021 with a 100 billion max supply and a 9% transaction tax split three ways (3% to holders, 3% burned, 3% marketing), attached to a side-scrolling runner. You paid 100 DOGEDASH per session and could collect a maximum of 10,000 across ten levels.
That is a 100x payout ceiling per play, funded by nothing except the token itself. Price rose more than 8,500% in the first month and then gave back over 90%. Snoop Dogg's son Cordell Broadus was named creative director in December 2021, which is the sort of detail that tells you what the product was really selling.
By April 21, 2022 the project announced a rebrand to HELLO, with holders able to swap at equal value. The Motley Fool's entry, updated April 29, 2026, still lists that migration as the current status. Four years is a long time to be mid-pivot.
4. DOGEBALL, and the 25% marketing allocation
DOGEBALL is the native token of DOGECHAIN, a custom Ethereum Layer 2 pitched at gaming with sub-two-second blocks, attached to a competitive dodgeball game with a $1 million on-chain prize pool, half of it reserved for a single top-ranked player. Falcon Interactive is named as a gaming partner. The detail worth holding onto is that the coverage is sponsored, which CaptainAltcoin discloses.
The presale ran in 15 stages from January 2 to May 2, 2026, starting at $0.0003 against a planned $0.015 listing, a 50x written into the spreadsheet before a single order book existed. Supply is fixed at 80 billion. The allocation: 25% presale, 25% marketing and adoption, 15% liquidity, 15% staking and game rewards, 10% development, 10% treasury.
Marketing gets two and a half times what development gets. A minimum 15% of raised funds locked as liquidity is better than nothing, and PepeNode's 37 ETH pool is the reference case for what "nothing" looks like. If chain-level throughput is your deciding factor, the gaming chain comparisons are a more useful starting point than a block-time claim in a presale deck.
5. The presale tier, where most of this category now lives
Apeing is the current example and a useful calibration exercise. A September 9, 2026 press release reported over 18,000 whitelist registrations. Stage 1 opened September 8 at $0.0001; by September 14 the presale had reached Stage 3 at $0.0004, with more than 410 million tokens sold and over $80,000 raised. Proposed listing price is $0.01, described as not guaranteed.
Eighteen thousand registrations against roughly $80,000 is under five dollars per registrant. The release says so itself, more politely.
The registration figure represents the number of reported whitelist registrations during the campaign. It does not establish future demand, trading activity, token performance or market value.
That disclaimer is boilerplate and it is also the most accurate sentence in the entire category. Whitelist counts, Telegram members and staged price ladders measure marketing spend. The same scepticism shows up in the crowd-sourced memecoin entry and exit tactics that traders share between launches.
So are play to earn games sustainable?
Not on the evidence, if sustainability means the reward token holds value. crypto.news analysed more than 3,200 Web3 gaming projects and found roughly 93% effectively dead, with failed projects surviving about four months on average and most dropping under 100 daily active users. Of token sales run since 2025, six of 41 are profitable. HyroTrader's August 31, 2026 guide cites the same 93% figure as a first-year failure rate, alongside $6.5 billion in rug-pull losses during 2025.
The engagement numbers are messier than either bulls or bears admit. CoinLaw puts daily active gaming wallets at 4.66 million in Q3 2025, down 4.4% quarter on quarter but still 25% of all Web3 wallet activity; Data40 claims 7.4 million daily across 2024 to 2025. Those are different measurements of different things, and neither is audited. Bex.co counts weekly NFT gaming sales up 30% to $85 million in early 2026 and calls it a resurgence.
My read: the sector is not dying so much as stagnating with rotating leadership, CoinLaw's phrase. Over 300 gaming dapps went inactive in Q2 2025 alone, an 8% attrition rate, and 32.6% of studios report cash shortages, which is exactly when advertised APYs get cut. Note also that nothing in the sources reviewed documents a Shiba Inu gaming push with current figures attached, so treat claims about one as unsourced until a number appears.
Bonus: the wallet you connect is not the wallet you keep
Every game here works by connecting a wallet and granting token approvals to game contracts. PepeNode's 3.2 out of 10 CertiK rating is a reminder of what you are approving. SQ Magazine puts 2025 Web3 hack and scam losses at $3.35 billion inside a $9.3 billion total, with $2.02 billion attributed to North Korean actors.
The practical split is boring and effective: a hot wallet holding only what you are willing to spend on nodes, ores or entry fees, and long-term holdings signed from hardware that never touches a game contract. If a reward token does hold value, that is the wallet you want it in.
Changelly's evaluation framework is the cheapest diligence available and most presale buyers skip it: compare market cap to FDV, map emissions and unlocks, and check that something removes supply. "Healthy economies burn or consume tokens or NFTs," it notes. "If nothing removes supply, emissions will outrun demand." PepeNode had a burn and still shed 99.68% from a launch-day high, because a sink only matters relative to what is already circulating.
If you are playing these for the game, TerraX asks the least of you financially. If you are playing for the payout, the honest number is the 93% that did not make it through year one.
